A rose is a rose is a rose. And a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Nonetheless, with these nifty literary allusions in mind, for several months the Pegasus staff has been contemplating a possible name change for its beloved flagship newsletter, The Systems Thinker.

Since its launch more than 14 years ago, the editorial focus of the newsletter has subtly broadened to encompass the best innovations in management—innovations that can help people apply the tools and concepts of systems thinking to strengthen the impact of their contributions in their homes, workplaces, and communities. And while systems thinking remains the core perspective of the newsletter, we wonder whether a new name that more vividly reflects the constantly evolving thought and groundbreaking practices that grace its pages might support the spread of the systems thinking to a wider community.

To help inform your intellect, spur your imagination, and give you a sense of the content of the newsletter, we have posted links to two complete issues of The Systems Thinker at the top of this page. The issues reflect this integrated approach to tackling tough, intransigent issues—by combining the power of systems thinking with tools for surfacing and capitalizing on our collective wisdom, we can gain new leverage on old problems and open up the possibilities for creating a more promising tomorrow.

We invite you to view/download the above PDF files, read the issues, and send your ideas for a new name to us at editorial@pegasuscom.com. Be sure to put "RENAME THE SYSTEMS THINKER" in the subject line (to help us manage the e-mails) and include your name, phone number, and mailing address so we can easily reach you. Also, if you don't mind increasing the competition, you can even e-mail a link to this page to any friends you think might want to contribute their own suggestions.

The entry deadline is April 15, 2004. After then we'll collect and review all the suggestions. If we find one we like better than “The Systems Thinker,” we'll give the person who sent it a FREE REGISTRATION to the 2004 Pegasus Conference in Boston, Dec 1-3 (or, if you have already registered, we’ll refund your registration fee). If two or more people suggest the same winning name, the prize will go to the earliest-dated entry. If we decide to continue with the current name, we'll randomly draw a person's name from the pool of entrants and award the registration to that person. You can send in as many entries as you like, BUT if we reach the stage of a random drawing we'll only enter your name once, so there is no advantage to stuffing the box. The winner will be announced in our free Leverage Points newsletter.

You don’t need to be a current subscriber to win, although we’d love for you to sign up once you see how much the newsletter can contribute to your work and your life. If you want to subscribe, please return to the home page and click on subscribe.
